Jade Cong
Liangzhu Culture, Yangtze Delta, China
c. 3400–2250 BCE
This ritual object, known as a cong, features a circular hollow within a square body, symbolizing the union of heaven and earth. Carved from jade, a material associated with power and spirituality, cong were central to Liangzhu ritual practice and often decorated with stylized mask motifs. Their presence in elite burials reflects both cosmological beliefs and the authority of those who possessed them.
