Shang Dynasty Jade Duck
China, ca. 1600–1046 BCE
Carved in the form of a duck with elegantly arched neck and rounded body, this jade figure bears finely incised wings with geometric feather patterns. The surface shows mottled hues of green, brown, and buff with areas of calcification and weathering, consistent with long burial. Compact yet expressive, the carving reflects the Shang tradition of animal-form jades, which often carried ritual or symbolic significance.
